I'm Lexia Frank

You’ll find lots of black and white photojournalism in the portfolio, a direct influence from my time in the dark room while obtaining my fine art degree from the University of Wisconsin.

Guiding my clients into those graceful and beautiful poses is a talent I've cultivated from 20 years of teaching dance to students of all ages. My clients feel comfortable in front of the camera because they know I'm in their corner.

educator

The long studio hours in figure drawing in art school developed my love of sketching the human form, lighting, and composition. my clients receive photography that has a fine art degree to back it up.

Drawing upon my time as a company member with the Madison Ballet I know how to cultivate the most elegant angles, shapes, and lines of the body, and use that knowledge to guide my clients.

dancer

My time on stage, and my time working with celebrity clients, has enabled me to stay calm in high-pressure, highly-visible situations with ease. My clients know i can deliver, even in stressful situations.

my work as a mother of three has honed my empathy, increased my mental flexibility, and given me an acute awareness of how fleeting time is. Photography is one way I preserve these moments, for savoring later when we have more capacity to enjoy them. if i can lead a pre-school classroom while calming a tantrum while doing laundry and making dinner- I'm pretty sure I can handle anything that happens on our shoot day.

As a certified Master Naturalist, I keep our environment at the forefront of my mind in my business practices. see our IMACT page for more information on how we honor our Mother Earth.

the captcha has confirmed I'm not a robot. I lead this business with humanity first, capitalism last. I strive for wonder and magic, not perfectionism. Every human is welcome here; we are inclusive, LGBTQIA champions, and fully ADA accessible.

my post-graduate degree in digital marketing helps me to create work through the lens of a marketer, not just through the lens of an artist. I keep the end-user (your intended audience) in mind as we create. Yes, it's artwork, but it's also data-driven for business growth.

my friends and clients joke i'm their professional cheerleader, but the truth is that runs deep within my veins. 2nd in the nation division 1a National Championship University of Wisconsin Dance Team member right here!

formal bio

Lexia Frank is a highly sought after photographer  and artist based in the midwest at Studio Soma in madison wisconsin.

As a former ballet dancer with the Madison Ballet in Wisconsin, and member of the University of Wisconsin Dance Team she attributes her love for the human form and the arts from her years dancing, and she translates this beautifully into her photography. While obtaining her degree in Fine Art from the University of Wisconsin she fell in love with the traditional practices of film photography, and continues to use these methods of image-making in her business which helps to set her apart from the slew of digital media in this current age.

In her work, she aspires to create honest, raw, quietly emotional imagery.

In 2011 Lexia won the prestigious Canon Project Imagin8ion Contest chosen by Ron Howard as the winner from amongst almost 100,000 photographs. The chosen photograph went on to inspire the award winning film “When You Find Me”, directed by Academy Award winning director Ron Howard and Bryce Dallas Howard. Ron Howard says about Lexia’s work: “It’s dramatic, it’s utterly human, powerfully relatable. (Her work) spoke so pointedly, powerfully, to a very relatable set of human emotions.”

She, as well as her work, have graced the cover of many national magazines such as BabyTalk, Rangefinder, and Veil magazine; can be seen in almost every major national publication including Martha Stewart Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, and Vogue. As an industry leader she can also be seen speaking at numerous conferences a year, and is launching an educational platform to teach creative entrepreneurs how to do better work for their clients as well as build a business they love.

Her destination work has taken her all over the world- to Africa, the Middle East, Europe, Asia, the Caribbean and beyond, and while she lives for her next plane ticket, she enjoys just as much cuddling up with her family in her home in Madison.  She can be found taking a contemporary dance class, creating drawings in her sketchbook, volunteering as a master naturalist, or dreaming of her next big creative endeavor.

In the future Lexia plans to work (specifically) with fine arts organizations to amplify their mission and impact on younger generations. She is continually inspired by the work of Pleasant T Rowland and her effort to spread arts access to children. Following in those footsteps, Lexia's end goal is to ensure that future generations of children have ample access to the arts and live in healthy, nature-rich, joy-filled, environments.

If you are an arts organization or know of one who might be interested in Lexia's services, please feel free to connect them to one another.

These photos are AMAZING!  We could not have made this project happen without your energy, expertise, and generosity. I was impressed with all of it, the kids, the studio, the organization of it all.
I can’t believe it all got done in less than three hours.Thank you so much!
